Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will host the central memorial service for those who died in the corona pandemic on April 18 at 1 p.m. in the Konzerthaus Berlin on Gendarmenmarkt.

Together with the other constitutional organs, the Federal President would like to set an example that we as a society commemorate the people who died during this time. The memorial is also dedicated to the bereaved, who were not allowed to accompany their relatives as they died and who were unable to perform important and comforting rituals of mourning.

Even if the pandemic has not yet been overcome, this should be a day of pause, which shows that we as a society take part and do not forget the dead and the suffering of the bereaved.

Against the background of the pandemic situation, the commemoration takes place in small groups and under strict protective conditions. In addition to five surviving dependents and their companions, the heads of the five constitutional organs and a representative of the diplomatic corps will also take part.

Before the memorial act, an ecumenical service will take place in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church from 10.15 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. The act of commemoration will be broadcast live from 12.50 p.m. on ZDF and Deutschlandfunk, among others. (bundespraesident.de)
